Sergio Nuncio started working in a pawn shop at the age of 17, where he worked the counter and started to develop an interest in watches of all kinds. Although he didn’t know much about watches at the time, he had a knack for buying the best merchandise from the customers before they could hit the displays. One day, Sergio was working the counter, when a customer came into the store and offered to buy the watch off his wrist. Sergio was shocked and was not about to sell his watch to this man, but his girlfriend wanted to go and see a concert and Sergio needed the money to buy the tickets, so the next day he contacted the buyer and asked if he was still interested and sold him the watch.
A few weeks later, the same man came back to the pawn shop and saw that Sergio had the exact same watch on his wrist and asked him how that was possible, so Sergio pulled out a gym bag full of watches he had been buying since he had started working at the pawn shop. This man gave Sergio a book on vintage watches that changed his life and made him realize his hobby was actually worth money. Sergio learned everything he could about watches…or so he thought.
A few years later, Sergio had become very proficient in buying and selling watches. He still had his job at the pawn shop, where he sourced his watch collection, and he had made many contacts that would then buy these watches at a higher margin. The first watch and jewelry show that Sergio ever attended, he had a ladies Rolex watch with him that he wanted to sell, when a very reputable jeweler came over and asked him what his price was for the watch. The man made him an offer and Sergio grabbed it because at the time, he had never seen so much money in his young life. After the sale was made, the man took Sergio aside and told him he wanted to teach him a lesson and explained that this Rolex was platinum and very rare, while Sergio thought it was just stainless and stood there speechless.
This was a defining moment for Sergio, because he realized that bag full of watches wasn’t just a bag full of money but a bag full of jewelry, and he began to actually study and learn the history of each piece, not just what the price should be. Sergio eventually moved into buying and selling small diamonds and estate jewelry, which is how he met Jonathan Siegel. Sergio and Jonathan joined forces shortly after meeting to form Jonathan’s Fine Jewelers, where Jonathan sold the diamonds and estate jewelry that Sergio sourced to buy. But, the watches always have remained Sergio’s baby.
Over the years Sergio has grown his private collection of watches. He prefers Rolex, and has a bucket list of watches that he one day hopes to own. When Sergio isn’t working on a watch or diamond deal, he is hanging out with his wife and three children or working on his salt water aquarium, watching football or fishing.
